IHE Delft PhD Thesis Series

About the Series

IHE Delft PhD programme leads to a deepening of a field of specialisation. PhD fellows do scientific research, often with conclusions that directly influence their region. At IHE Delft, PhD researchers from around the world participate in problem-focused and solution-oriented research on development issues, resulting in an inspiring research environment. PhD fellows work together with other researchers from many countries dealing with topics related to water and the environment.

PhD research is often carried out in the ‘sandwich’ model. Preparation and final reporting – the first and last portion of the programme – are carried out in Delft, while actual research is done in the fellow’s home country, under co-supervision of a local institute. Regular contacts with the promotor are maintained through visits and long-distance communication. This enables researchers to employ solutions directly to problems in their geographical region.

IHE Delft PhD degrees are awarded jointly with a university. The degrees are highly valued and fully recognised in all parts of the world.

Downstream Consequences of Ribb River Damming, Lake Tana Basin, Ethiopia

Downstream Consequences of Ribb River Damming, Lake Tana Basin, Ethiopia

1st Edition

By Chalachew Abebe Mulatu
September 05, 2022

This study assessed the downstream river system adaptation in response to upstream damming on the Ribb River, Ethiopia, to irrigate 15,000 ha. It combined primary and secondary data, and the application of remote sensing and mathematical modeling. The pre-dam morphodynamic trends of the Ribb River ...

A Novel Approach to Sludge Treatment Using Microwave Technology

A Novel Approach to Sludge Treatment Using Microwave Technology

1st Edition

By Eva Kocbek
March 01, 2022

Sludge transportation costs can represent a large fraction of the expenses associated with municipal and faecal sludge management. These costs can be mitigated through the use of thermal drying approaches to reduce the sludge volume. This thesis described the application of a novel microwave-based ...

Pathogen removal in aerobic granular sludge treatment systems

Pathogen removal in aerobic granular sludge treatment systems

1st Edition

By Mary Luz Barrios Hernàndez
February 14, 2022

This book describes pathogen removal processes in aerobic granular sludge (AGS) wastewater treatment systems. Faecal indicators (E. coli, Enterococci, coliforms and bacteriophages) were tracked in full-scale AGS facilities and compared to parallel activated sludge (CAS) systems. AGS showed similar ...

Spatio-temporal characterisation of drought: data analytics, modelling, tracking, impact and prediction

Spatio-temporal characterisation of drought: data analytics, modelling, tracking, impact and prediction

1st Edition

By Vitali Diaz Mercado
February 11, 2022

Studies of drought have increased in light of new data availability and advances in spatio-temporal analysis. However, the following gaps still need to be filled: 1) methods to characterise drought that explicitly consider its spatio-temporal features, such as spatial extent (area) and pathway; 2) ...

Development of an Efficient Modelling Approach to Support Economically and Socially Acceptable Flood Risk Reduction in Coastal Cities: Can Tho City, Mekong Delta, Vietnam

Development of an Efficient Modelling Approach to Support Economically and Socially Acceptable Flood Risk Reduction in Coastal Cities: Can Tho City, Mekong Delta, Vietnam

1st Edition

By Hieu Quang Ngo
January 10, 2022

Flooding is one of the most frequently occurring and damaging natural disasters worldwide. Quantitative flood risk management (FRM) in the modern context demands statistically robust approaches (e.g. probabilistic) due to the need to deal with complex uncertainties. However, probabilistic estimates...

Bioreduction of Selenite and Tellurite by Phanerochaete Chrysosporium

Bioreduction of Selenite and Tellurite by Phanerochaete Chrysosporium

1st Edition

By Erika Jimena Espinosa-Ortiz
July 28, 2016

Selenium (Se) and tellurium (Te) are metalloids of commercial interest due to their physicochemical properties. The water soluble oxyanions of these elements (selenite, selenate, tellurite and tellurate) exhibit high toxicities; hence, their release in the environment is of great concern. This ...

The effect of harvesting and flooding on nutrient cycling and retention in Cyperus papyrus wetlands

The effect of harvesting and flooding on nutrient cycling and retention in Cyperus papyrus wetlands

1st Edition

By Edwin M.A. Hes
November 18, 2021

African papyrus (Cyperus papyrus L.) wetlands provide water, food and materials to millions of people, and perform important landscape functions such as water and nutrient storage, habitat provision for fish, birds and other wildlife. They are also an integral part of the culture of African wetland...

Integrated Water Resources Management: A Systems Perspective of Water Governance and Hydrological Conditions Integrated Water Resources Management

Integrated Water Resources Management: A Systems Perspective of Water Governance and Hydrological Conditions: Integrated Water Resources Management

1st Edition

By Adey Mersha
October 14, 2021

This thesis presents analysis of the status of IWRM implementation along with the challenges with regards to policy and institutional measures as well as the required basin information and management instruments. The research entailed a detailed analysis of water resources systems based on a case ...

Adaptive Disaster Risk Assessment Combining Multi-Hazards with Socioeconomic Vulnerability and Dynamic Exposure

Adaptive Disaster Risk Assessment: Combining Multi-Hazards with Socioeconomic Vulnerability and Dynamic Exposure

1st Edition

By Neiler Medina Pena
October 09, 2021

Climate change, combined with the rapid and often unplanned urbanisation trends, is associated with a rising trend in the frequency and severity of disasters triggered by natural hazards. In order to face the impacts of such threats, it is necessary to have an appropriate Disaster Risk Assessment (...

Grasping the Water, Energy, and Food Security Nexus in the Local Context: Case study: Karawang Regency, Indonesia

1st Edition

By Aries Purwanto
October 03, 2021

The existence of water, energy, and food (WEF) is critical for people to fulfil their basic needs, to achieve welfare, and to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The WEF security topic is becoming widely discussed in developing and developed countries. Major components of WEF security...

Modeling of Hydrodynamics and Sediment Transport in the Mekong Delta

Modeling of Hydrodynamics and Sediment Transport in the Mekong Delta

1st Edition

By Vo Quoc Thanh
June 01, 2021

This research aims to investigate the prevailing sediment dynamics and the sediment budget in the Mekong Delta by using a process-based model. Understanding sediment dynamics for the Mekong Delta requires high resolution analysis and detailed data, which is a challenge for managers and scientists. ...
