ICA Handbook Series

About the Series

The ICA Handbook Series is a series of scholarly handbooks that represent the interests of the International Communicaton Association (ICA) members and help to further the association’s goals of promoting theory and research in the communication discipline.

Targeting scholars and advanced students in communication and media studies and related disciplines, each handbook serves as a benchmark summary of current communication scholarship in a specific area of research. Handbooks published in the series comprehensively chart the field by covering a range of key debates, issues and contexts. In addition to a critical engagement with central theoretical and empirical traditions, they provide a systematic and accessible overview of the state of scholarship, advance theory-building and problem-solving, and identify areas for further theory and research in an international context.

The series includes handbooks that consider content areas in communication research, methodological approaches to communication research, and theoretical lenses for scholarship in communication. The series volumes attempt to cross sub-disciplinary boundaries to address timely problems of international scope. They do not just represent different areas of the field but bring them together to focus on intersecting problems and research interests. Such problems may be formulated as topical concerns (globalization; democracy; health and wellbeing; gender and sexuality), theoretical approaches (social cognition; critical studies; feminist theory), or matters of communication in general (environmental communication; organizational communication).

A joint venture between the International Communication Association and Routledge, the ICA Handbook Series is edited by Karin Wahl-Jorgensen and Thomas Hanitzsch.
